📣 Whitley Golf Club – Course Notes

✍️ From Tom Nicholas, Course Manager

🙌 Divot Day – Thank You

A big thank you to the volunteers who supported our first Divot Day last week. Three members generously gave up 1.5 hours of their afternoon to help seed and sand divots on the 1st and 2nd fairways. With the recent showery weather, we are already seeing signs of dwarf ryegrass germination. We will be announcing further Divot Day dates soon – all help is greatly appreciated.

🌧️ Recent Rainfall & Turf Conditions

After a prolonged dry spell, we’ve finally received some meaningful rainfall. This has started to restore moisture levels in the turf, and the course is responding well. The greens and surrounds have received a granular feed to maintain healthy, vigorous growth.

Unfortunately, we’ve observed early signs of Dollar Spot disease on a couple of greens. While the symptoms are currently minor, we are taking proactive steps to address the issue. Our maintenance programme is designed to minimise plant stress and promote resilience against such diseases. In response, we will increase the frequency of soil conditioner applications in the affected areas to support plant health and recovery.

Upcoming Course Maintenance Dates

🗓️ 10th & 11th June – Tree Work (1st Hole) 🌳 🪵

We plan to carry out tree maintenance, with a focus on the 1st hole. Over time, the tee shot from the back tee has become increasingly narrow due to the growth of poplar trees on the right and ash trees on the left. To restore the playing corridor, selective tree cutting will be undertaken.

Please note: Tees will be moved forward onto the fairway during this work. If time allows, additional tree work will be carried out while we have access to height equipment.

🗓️ 17th June – Sand Topdressing (Greens & Surrounds) ⛳️

Weather permitting, we will apply a sand topdressing to the greens and their surrounds on this date. During the process, a temporary hole will be cut on each approach to allow golfers to continue play. We aim to have no more than two temporary greens in use at any one time.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we work to improve the course conditions for all members and visitors.
